چکیده

A bronchopulmonary lavage technique utilizing saline washings is described for removing OaZr 95Nb labeled Zr02 microspheres from the left lungs of beagle dogs. As assessed by external counting at 30 days post-exposure, the lungs of groups of dogs not lavaged, and those lavaged on day 0, day 8, day 16, or days 0, 8 and 16 post-exposure, contained 95, 88, 80, 74, and 72 percent of their initial burden, respectively. At sacrifice, 30 days post-exposure, >98 percent of the total radioactivity found in the animals at that time was in the lungs of both the lavaged and confrol dogs.

Observations on the lung retention of inhaled, relatively insoluble, environmentally-related particles.

M any particles found in the environment, such as those from diesel engine exhaust, fly ash from coal-burning power plants, fallout from nuclear weapons testing and natural dusts may be relatively insoluble in body fluids. A toxic material may be associated primarily with the surface of these particles or may be homogeneously or heterogeneously distributed throughout the mass of the particles. ...

Calculating pulmonary-mode-lethality risk avoidance associated with radionuclide decorporation countermeasures related to a radiological terrorism incident.

Planning for and managing radiological terrorism incidents that involve the release of radionuclides from a dirty bomb requires considering the potential lifesaving impact of protective radionuclide decorporation countermeasures (e.g., lung lavage). Lung lavage therapy could prevent deaths via the pulmonary mode (which involves radiation pneumonitis and fibrosis) by reducing the radiation dose ...

Use of bronchoalveolar lavage to detect lung damage.

The assay of bronchoalveolar washings from acutely exposed animals has proven useful as a rapid screen for lung injury from inhaled airborne toxins. The screen is useful for choosing appropriate compounds and exposure levels for subsequent in-depth studies in which complete histopathologic evaluations will be made. An inflammatory response can be detected by the appearance of polymorphonuclear ...

Alveolar macrophage kinetics after inhalation of 239PuO2 by CBA/Ca mice: changes in synthesis of DNA.

For workers in the nuclear industry, the primary route for the entry of radioactive materials into the body is by inhalation, and the rate of clearance of particles from the pulmonary region of the lung is an important factor in determining radiation dose. It is the function of alveolar macrophages (AM) to maintain the sterility of the lung and to remove insoluble particles from the respiratory...

Inhaled ethyl nitrite prevents hyperoxia-impaired postnatal alveolar development in newborn rats.

RATIONALE Inhaled nitric oxide (NO) has been used to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia, but with variable results. Ethyl nitrite (ENO) forms S-nitrosothiols more readily than does NO, and resists higher-order nitrogen oxide formation. Because S-nitrosylation is a key pathway mediating many NO biological effects, treatment with inhaled ENO may better protect postnatal lung development from oxid...
